Systemic change towards sustainable commuting in Lahti - Sycla
Sycla City Pilot experimented with different ways to encourage or "nudge" low and zero-emission commuting in workplaces located in the City of Lahti. The aim of the project was to find innovative solutions to promote sustainable commuting and thereby reduce emissions from road transport through a change in commuting patterns and reorganisation of urban transport.
The project explored the current state of commuting and identified individual, organisational and city level barriers and enablers to sustainable commuting within local pilot organisations. Development measures were proposed to and tested in the pilot organisations, based on the results of personnel surveys, case organisation interviews and workplace observations. The implemented interventions were guided and supported by the project. The impacts of the implemented experiments on commuting were followed and evaluated during the project.
As a result of the project, local pilot organisations received up-to-date information on the commuting of their staff, and on which benefits or changes in workplace practices or conditions motivate staff to choose more environmentally friendly modes of transport and that promote individual well-being.
The results of the project contribute to the City of Lahti's climate objectives and are utilised as part of sustainable urban mobility planning.
The pilot project was a collaborative effort between the City of Lahti (acting as the coordinator), LUT University, LAB University of Applied Sciences, and the Päijät-Häme Wellbeing Services Country of Päijät-Häme. The project is part of the EU mission 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. It has received funding through the NetZeroCities programme from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme under grant agreement No 101036519.
